Several years ago I was interviewing Iron Maiden front man Bruce Dickinson and MeteorCity Records had given me a copy of their Iron Maiden tribute album Slave To The Power to pass along to him. Bruce scoffed at first saying that he didn’t really like straight ‘Metal’ versions of Iron Maiden tunes. He said that he preferred artists that took a leap and did something different with the songs. To that end I’ve collected a few covers that he (and you) might enjoy.
If you have your own favorites please post them in the comments.
Shelly Watson -’The Trooper’ (I don’t know anything about Shelly, but I really like her version of this Iron Maiden classic)
Höyry-Kone – ‘The Trooper’ (from MeteorCity’s Iron Maiden tribute album Slave To The Power. Höyry-Kone disbanded and Alamaailman Vasarat was formed from their ashes…they’re worth checking out if you enjoyed this)
Watville Primary School Kids – ‘Flight Of Icarus’ (a benefit for Kerrang Magazine’s Cash For Kids charity)
Jonathan Faganello on Harp with Guitar- ‘Hallowed Be Thy Name’ (my personal favorite Iron Maiden tune done brilliantly http://www.jonathanfaganello.com.br/)
Jesse Schwartz – ‘Fear of the Dark’ (The Piano Jukebox)
Baaba Kulka – ‘Aces High’ (from my old friend Gaba Kulka, she has a new Iron Maiden tribute album out 3/21 and you can hear the studio version of ‘Aces High’ at her site http://gabakulka.com/
Ficamu2 – ‘Wasting Love’ (http://www.youtube.com/user/ficamu2)
Eric Tadashi Abe – ‘Fear of the Dark’ (not perfect, but a valiant effort…)
Anathema – ‘Phantom of the Opera’ (Yes…Anathema)
Gerry Phillips the Manualist – ‘The Trooper’ (You knew it was coming…see more of his…amazing…bizarre…handy(?) work here http://www.youtube.com/user/gunecologist)
Iron Maiden is currently on tour supporting their latest album The Final Frontier and will be releasing a 2CD best of titled From Fear To Eternity: The Best of 1990-2010 on May 24th in the US.
