OSI – Fire Make Thunder (2012, Metal Blade)

OSI – Fire Make Thunder is scheduled for release March 27th on Metal Blade Records

Office of Strategic Influence (OSI) is Jim Matheos (Fates Warning) and Kevin Moore (ex Dream Theater, Chroma Key).  They are joined here by returning session drummer Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree).  Matheos (guitar, bass) and Moore (keyboards, vocals) played/programmed everything but the drums and once again Moore penned all the lyrics.

Fire Make Thunder was recorded separately by each musician in their home studios then all the parts were combined and mixed in Jamaica, Iowa.

If you’re a fan of intelligent prog metal with a dose of politics and paranoia you’re going to love this.

1) Cold Call
2) Guards
3) Indian Curse
4) Enemy Prayer
5) Wind Won’t Howl
6) Big Chief II
7) For Nothing
8) Invisible Men

You can pre-order the album and hear a preview at the Metal Blade site:

Now Playing: 2012 pt. 2

OK so far so good in 2012…

anneke van giersbergen - everything is changing

Anneke Van Giersbergen – Everything Is Changing (PIAS, 2012)

I was smitten with Anneke the very first time I heard her in the Dutch ‘trip rock’ band The Gathering.  She sings with incredible emotion whether it’s joy, sadness or melancholy and with such clarity.  She left the band in 2007 to pursue a solo career that wasn’t all that different musically, maybe a little more pop influenced.  With that voice it doesn’t mater what style she’s singing.

Alcest - Les Voyages De L'Âme

Alcest – Les Voyages De L’Âme (Prophecy Productions, 2012)

How to describe France’s Alcest…beauty in darkness?  It’s epic and soaring and heavy, but at the same time it’s gorgeous and shimmering.  This is their third album and they just get better and better.

Rodrigo y Gabriela and C.U.B.A. – Area 52 (Rubyworks, 2012)

The Mexican guitar duo made a name for itself among Metal fans by covering Metallica songs, not unlike Apocalyptica some years ago.  They also suffered the same fate in that while their music was technically brilliant it got old rather quickly and needed something to break it up a little.  On Area 52 the duo teams with other musicians including sitar player (and daughter of Ravi) Anoushka Shankar, the oud ensemble Le Trio Joubran and a 13 piece Cuban orchestra featuring members of Los Van Van and the results are astounding.  The larger ensemble gives the older songs new depth and energy.  Hopefully it exposes Metal fans to some new genres of music along the way.

Land of 1000 Listens

Forget hipsters, scenesters and taste makers…if you want an opinion on good music then you’re going to go with someone you trust.  It can be a friend, colleague or just someone who listens to a lot of music from a lot of genres and is able to speak intelligently about it.  They’re not out to sell you anything or get ‘hits’ for their site, they just appreciate music.  You may not like everything they suggest and that’s ok, but everything they write about is worth hearing.

Land of 1000 Listens is based on Tom Moon’s book 1,000 Recordings To Hear Before You Die and exactly what it says, nothing more and nothing less.  Here’s how it will go:

  • In a slight variance from the book title, I’m not going to just hear these recordings, I’m going to listen to them.  Several times for each – unless it’s an album I’m very familiar with – in which case I’ll probably only listen once.  That’s why I’m thinking I won’t listen to more than one or two each week.
  • I’m going to follow the book and go in alphabetical artist order.  This strikes me as fun because the musical styles I hear will bounce all over the place.  That will be one of the most interesting parts of this journey for me – getting to hear genres I generally haven’t touched – classical, opera, world…
  • I’m going to listen to the recordings on Spotify (as many of you know, this is my new addiction).  If something is not on Spotify, I’ll move on and come back sometime later.  I’m not going to spend hours scouring the Internet for a rare recording just for the sake of perfection.  It will actually be quite interesting to see how I’m digesting music when this journey is done – six months ago, I hadn’t even heard of Spotify – what will music consumption be like in 2022?  Crazy thought.

Artists covered so far have included ABBA and Muhal Richard Abrams, that should give you some idea of how diverse things are going to be.

So bookmark it, subscribe to it, write the URL on a post-it and stick it to your monitor…whatever it takes.  Keep checking back and keep listening.
